Feeling Holi-Dazed?

We find that, for the most part, there are two types of people in the world. Those that start decorating for the holidays even before the weather starts to turn cold and those that put off the untangling of lights and unpacking of glitter-shedding ornaments for as long as possible. Whether you find decorating for the holidays delightful or dreadful, we want to offer our perspective on preparing for the holidays in hopes of making your holiday season a little more joyful and bright!

A few decorating tips:

  • There is no wrong way to decorate for the holidays! If it makes you happy- it’s in!
  • Pay attention to the style of your home- craftsman, traditional, cottage, modern.
  • Think outside of “traditional” colors for the holiday that you celebrate!
  • Don’t forget the lighting! Light is part of every winter holiday from Kwanza to Christmas to Hanukkah. Light lifts the spirit during winter months.
  • Experiment! What about a basket or a planter instead of a tree skirt? Olive tree branches instead garland behind your menorah?
Instead of a tree skirt, we used a thick mesh ribbon!

Even if you adore decorating for the holidays, it can be overwhelming! We suggest beginning by focusing on a few impactful areas like the front door and then then move to the hearth. Next add pillows, throws, and scents to create ambiance and coziness.  Then, the tree or any other sentimental items that are part of your holiday traditions. We like to move slowly through this part of decorating. The holiday season always seems to go so quickly and taking this time to move slowly and connect to our pasts and our loved ones helps to bring perspective and peace.

Personalized ornaments have a special place in our home!

Spending time with the people in our lives that mean the most to us is one of the most important parts of the holiday season. Elevation Avenue is a family-owned and run business and has been for over 25 years! For Kevin and I, each time we are invited into a client’s home, whether it’s for a redesign or a remodel, we feel so honored. We truly feel like we get to become part of our client’s families. One of our family’s favorite holiday traditions is transforming our home into a Winter Wonderland, complete with little elves! We turn on our favorite Christmas music, pour a drink and the whole family gets involved in adding traditional splashes of red and green mixed with natural elements like frosted cranberries, greenery, and wood.

Frosted cranberries are an unexpected addition to a Christmas tree.

As the holidays approach and the days get shorter, we hope that you are feeling a little inspired and maybe even a little joyful about decorating your home. Remember, if it makes you happy- it’s in! If you’re considering a redesign or a remodel, give us a call and let our family walk with you into the New Year with a refreshed home!
